Cork Ocean To City 2014

2014 An Rás Mór

OceanToCity 253 high res

Next year’s Ocean to City Race – An Rás Mór takes place on Saturday 31st May 2014. A full weekend with travelling over/back/recovery time.

Ocean to City – An Rás Mór is Ireland’s very own long-distance rowing race attracting hundreds of participants annually.

Now in its tenth year, it has grown from its origin as a race for traditional fixed-seat boats into an all-inclusive rowing event, embracing everything from traditional wooden working boats, curachs, skiffs, gigs and longboats to contemporary ocean racing shells, kayaks and canoes.

With thousands of spectators each year, the race is a real flagship event for Cork Harbour; one of the largest natural harbours in the world. An Rás Mór (”The Big Race”) appeals to a wide range of rowers and paddlers from across Ireland and beyond. We row the long Ocean Course (15 nautical miles / 28km) from Crosshaven to Roche’s Point to Cobh, Monkstown and through Lough Mahon to Lapp’s Quay in Cork city.

Modelled on London’s Great River Race, start times are staggered with the slowest boat types leaving first (Stuarts boat?), and the fastest boat types leaving last. With ocean and city course finishing times varying between 1:45 and 4:30, An Rás Mór is much more than just a race… it is a test of endurance, a personal challenge and a shared effort. It is Ireland’s very own harbour marathon, and a coming together of people who love these waters and love their boats

The endurance test usually goes on well into the night, especially if Chicken is in charge of the Kitty. However, if Gareth can make it….stick close and you’ll get home ….eventually.

Limited to two boats (one trailer) to make it easy. We could expand if oversubscribed/we can sort out trailers.
